About Grassroots Animal Rescue:

Grassroots Animal Rescue is a dedicated group of foster homes, in which our cats and kittens live, heal, and thrive until adoption. We emphasize quality in all our operations, including intake decisions, fostering, medical care, and adoptions. Our mission also includes hoping to further wellness information on cat care, especially as it comes to nutrition and declaw.

We are a 501(c)3 non-profit. We rescue cats from high volume Chicagoland open access shelters, such as CACC, AWL, Cicero, Aurora, Naperville, and Kankakee. We view adoptions as a partnership between families, the cat,  fosters, and the rescue. We hope they last a lifetime, and love to see our kittens and cats thrive with their new families.

Why is Spay and Neuter Crucial to Our Work?

Spay/neuter is central to the No-Kill movement in Chicago. One unspayed cat can theoretically have up to 3 litters a year. With an average of 5 kittens per litter, and a life span of 10-12 years, one cat could have between 150-180 cats in her life! All cats and kittens in our program are altered to reduce the overwhelming pet population in the city of Chicago

What's great about the foster model?

All our fosters are truly invested in the process of foster from intake to medical and wellness care to adoption. Cats emerge stressed and grateful from their time being bounced around at shelters, and have time to settle while their personalities develop and clarify. When someone adopts from us, they come to see how they are within the home. We are small but mighty.

Why Do We Fundraise?

All our cats receive the best medical care at our vet partners. They are spayed and neutered prior to adoption, tested from FIV/FeLV, dewormed, vaccinated, and treated for any illnesses. Over 80% of our expenses fund the direct care of these cats (medical, food, etc). Grassroots Animal Rescue has no paid staff, so all our money spent is related to cat care!
